Over its 90 years years our Lido has held a unique place in the Peterborough: close to the heart of the city; easy to reach by foot, bike, car, bus and train. It’s even more remarkable as, despite it central city location, it sits in a micro area of calmness, surrounded by peaceful gardens and the green space of the river embankment.
So, is the lido a place to meet friends to swim, to exercise, to chat and to have fun? Is it a place for families to have a local day out? Is it a place for children to splash about and make friends or learn to swim? Of course it is!
But…
… to many people it has been so much more. The swimming club, active since the lido was built, has trained swimmers who have won medals and trophies. It’s trained swimmers who have become county, national, and international level and even Olympic champions. It’s been a training pool for several swimmers who decided to conquer the challenge of the English Channel. It’s also been a place where local people can raise much needed money for charities by stretching themselves to swim for a specific distance or time.
This year the Lido is where John Rothery, an osteopath and previous open water swimming coach is training to swim the channel as part of a relay team of six. The swim, to raise funds for the Charity Aspire, will take place in August this year. John has recently moved to this area from Pembrokeshire and loves swimming outdoors and says “As part of my training regime I am swimming in Peterborough lido on Sunday mornings and finding it an excellent facility“.
