It is with great sadness that we have received the news of the death of Sam Chapman, the most senior member of Friends of Peterborough Lido and father of Paul Chapman, one of our most regular volunteers.
Aged 96, Sam was a regular visitor at the Lido accompanying Paul, on his early morning swims and other events.
Unable to swim himself in latter years, Sam enjoyed being a spectator sitting at the deep end, soaking up the atmosphere and banter, and meeting up with swimming friends.
Those of us who had the pleasure and privilege to meet Sam, will miss his smile, friendship, encouragement and shared love of the Lido.
Together Paul and Sam travelled the country visiting other Lidos, keeping us all informed and entertained with their road trip reports for the Destination Swims page of our website.
We have expressed our best wishes and sadness to Paul and have asked to be kept informed of Sam’s funeral arrangements. If anyone should wish to know the details, please do get in touch.
