We are devastated to read the proposal to mothball our wonderful Lido in Peterborough City Council’s budget consultation document. The Lido is currently the only affordable and accessible public swimming facility in Peterborough and at a time when prevention is a high priority regarding government health policy, it meets several key objectives including:
Health and Wellbeing – Reducing the cost to local health services and encourages a healthy workforce – provides a safe, accessible, and affordable place to exercise in line with the social prescribing model. Benefits of physical exercise such as outdoor swimming, particularly outdoor exposure to daylight, include the positive effect on the circadian rhythm regulation, sleep quality, mood and cognitive function, healthy melatonin production, improving sleep cycles and overall mental and physical wellbeing.
Regeneration and Tourism – attracts visitors from all over the UK and beyond for day trips and longer, staying at Nene Park camping area and local hotels, offering a unique outdoor swimming experience.
Community Cohesion – brings together people including families from all parts of the community, regardless of race, culture, gender, age, background in a leisure setting.
Safety and Prevention – provides a safe clean space for children to learn to swim, preventing future risks including accidents and drowning and all dangers associated with lake and river swimming.
History and Heritage – One of the few and best art deco lidos of its kind across the UK- contributing a part of the city’s rich history from1936 and encouraging a sense of positive interest, pride, and investment in the city’s heritage for those who live here and visitors.

Thank you.

There are very few leisure facilities worth commenting on in Peterborough anymore. The Lido is a unique facility and should remain open whatever the cost. If moth balled it will be the end as it will fall into disrepair, never to open again. An easy target for wannabe politicians playing with other people’s money, without consultation. It doesn’t matter which party is in power such a facility (listed building) is vital to the community and beyond. If it is removed people will resort to swimming in rivers and the like. This is obviously dangerous, the lido provides a safe, life guarded place for safe swimming!

I cannot believe this is even under consideration, the lido is a great for families to visit in the summer time! I have three girls aging from 18 to 8 and they all like coming here for a swim and an ice cream, we often spend many hours here in the summer holidays. Many memories made and lots of laughter along the way! My husband also completed his Iron Man training here for his open water swim. Due to the regional pool now being closed it will be a shame to have the Lido closed now too this will leave us with nothing in a very failing city centre!

There is very little for the people of Peterborough to enjoy but keeping the Lido is a must. Swimming is good for health and mental health. As the regional pool has closed its a must that this one is kept open. We all pay our council tax and deserve better from our council.

The Lido is an essential asset to Peterborough. It is very well used. Surely the PCC must realise how important it is to our city to keep it open and flourishing.

How many people have to die in the rivers because the council want to save money ?? put a stop to the unneeded bridge that they are building for millions of our pounds and put that money in to the Lido that is much more needed than an EXTRA bridge they have taken the indoor pool away from us leave the lido alone.
Thank you for your comment Sally. The Bridge money is ring fenced and from a separate source that does not affect the Council budget. There is much going on in the background with regards to the lido, and you can help by filling in the councils survey . The link is in the post.

I’m so shocked that the lido could be closed. It’s a wonderful place for families and people to swim and contributes to being healthy and our well being. Being an outside swimming pool is very popular for families in the summer and gets children and teenagers out of their house.

With the closing of the Regional Pool there are not enough places where children can learn to swim. The closure of the Lido would be an outrage!

The Lido is a unique and well loved iconic building in our city, not only this, but it is so well used and loved by so many of our citizens, for numerous activities, that it would be a truly shameful thing for the council to choose to save money on.

The lido is important to the families and children of Peterborough. We must keep these leisure facilities to enable our children to enjoy exercise/learn to swim. We must value childhood experiences in a world where our children are living more and more on line – let’s provide other options.

We can’t I can’t have the Lido shut down. It is a great use for not just the Swimming months but for people with health issues and welfare I know people with disability needs to use this pool might vomit when it is open in March up until the end of October I also have grandchildren that use this pool for their training with COPS my grandchildren use this pulled as well from March right the way through until the end of November they love coming here I’ve always come to this pool since I was younger and is it a great asset? I can’t say why we can’t get a retractable roof put on it and then we can use it all year round we have very few pools that we can use and if the light goes, it will be a pool that we can’t use at all as the other pools we can only use when the schools are not using them.

We no longer have a Deep Water Aqua Class due to the closure of the Regional Pool . This class is vital to Residents , particularly the Deep Water for Health Benefits , i know this as i have done 23yrs of Deep Aqua Fit until the Regional Pool closed , at which point my Osteo Arthritis plummeted . It is allso invaluable for lots of Medical conditions inc Mental Health .
I know that to moth Ball Pools is a huge Risk of getting it back and the longer its in that state the less chance there is .
DO NOT MOTHBALL ! This City will never forgive you .
If you do this there is nothing else you can take from us the Residents .😡
