Update on our Lido’s Future

Sunrise on the future

As you may be aware, the contract for sport, leisure and heritage services in Peterborough was handed back to Peterborough City Council at midnight on 30th September this year … and supporters of our lido you will no doubt be wondering what happens next …

Firstly, you may have read in local media, the responsibility for managing libraries, heritage sites, and the museum and art gallery has now been transferred to the City College (under a new company ‘City Culture’), while sports facilities are transferred to Peterborough Limited (Aragon Services).

More recentlyrepresentatives of the lido friends were invited to attend a meeting with members of the city council, outcomes from which were encouraging:

  • Our lido was described as “the jewel in the crown” of Peterborough’s leisure estate, and all parties are planning for a grand reopening – “with a bang” – in 2021!

  • We were assured that the council very much intend to operate services on a partnership – rather than a contract – basis, and that discussions with the friends’ groups would be very much a part of future planning.

We emphasised that we have enjoyed a supportive and beneficial working relationship with both Vivacity and the City Council, and that we supported the decision not to open the lido for the 2020 season for sound, safety reasons – to keep people safe from COVID.  We would like to add that comments made by others criticising the actions taken by these agencies are not helpful to future working relationships, and do not represent, nor are made on behalf of, the Friends of Peterborough Lido.

Meetings with the council are now to be held on a regular basis – with the next scheduled to take place before Christmas.  We will continue to update this website with news and developments as and when we become aware of them.
