SUMMER HAS ARRIVED AT PETERBOROUGH LIDO!
By Janet Martin
It’s been eight months since we were last able to enjoy swimming in our wonderful Lido, and many of us have been counting the days until we could savour the simple pleasure of swimming here once again. As our website proudly advocates – there is nothing better than swimming in sparkling water whilst surrounded by blue skies, with the trees newly in leaf, and the feeling of fresh air on your skin. Swimming in the open air is simply exhilarating and energising – and we simply can’t wait for opening day each year … it is the very purpose for which the Friends work all year – to ensure the Lido can continue to open each May to the delight of so many visitors.
AMID BRIGHT SUNSHINE, A small crowd gathered for the 10am opening ceremony on Saturday, which was preceded by words of welcome by the Lido’s General Manager, Steven Luker. We were given the opportunity to give a brief overview of the work of the Friends (yet another endorsement of the fantastic working relationship we have formed with Vivacity’s Management Team) before the ribbon was cut and the Lido was officially declared open for its 83rd year by the new Mayor of Peterborough (the City elects a new Mayor each May) – Councillor Gul Nawaz. His speech reiterated the fact that Peterborough’s Lido, with its Art Deco design, is one of the finest in the Country – not to mention one of very few that has managed to remain open every year since its opening, resisting the fate of many outdoor pools that were forced to close during the 1970s and 80s and are now struggling to raise the millions of pounds required to restore them to their former glory. We are truly blessed to have this “gem” in the middle of our City.
Thanks to the energy and commitment of Steven and his team new innovations and events are emerging each year. 2019 sees the extension and modernisation of the Lido Café, which now offers a range of sandwiches and cold snacks in addition to the traditional hot food menu. The Summer solstice events (sunrise and sunset) are to be repeated; two – rather than one – early morning swims will be available each week; and we’re excited to say that the Season will also introduce the new phenomenon of midnight swims (please see our events page for details).
Most of us have not been around for the 83 years of our Lido’s existence! … but we are thrilled to see this much-loved amenity not only surviving, but going from strength to strength. We look forward to once again being able to enjoy its silky waters, and to meeting up with many of our fellow enthusiasts during the coming months.
