A Trip to Scotland.

Each summer over the last few years several of the Peterborough Lido swimmers have traveled to open-air pools around the Country. Their love of open-air swimming and historic lidos have taken them all over the country. This last Tuesday, Jeanne Butler, Irene Johnston along with Kay Collins who has temporally relocated to London, travelled up to Scotland to a recently revamped pool in New Cumnock  in Ayrshire. Never daunted by distance their three day trip began with a long journey involving several trains, a bus and a taxi. From Peterborough, Jeanne and Irene traveled south to Kings Cross, where they picked up Kay and crossed to Euston station where they took a train to Carlisle, transferred to a second train up to  Cumnock then a bus to the hotel for their stay. The rail fares for their round about trip was cheaper than going north direct from Peterborough.

New Cumnock Pools smart new building.

New Cumnock’s 25 metre pool cannot be called historic, being built in 1966, but its predicted 25 year life span had seen it deteriorate badly. The pool though, has been saved by the Community and a Heritage-led regeneration aided by HRH The Duke of Rothesay, aka Prince Charles. The Changing rooms, indoor, outdoor, family and disabled were rebuilt as a direct result of his intervention. Much of the original pool area buildings had to be demolished and rebuilt as builders discovered there were no foundations to the original work. State of the art filter and heating systems were installed. Bespoke windows and doors were made in the workshops at Dumfries House. Porcelanosa supplied tiles from Spain and Limestone used came from materials recycled from Dumfries House.

The pool is much used by the Community and our intrepid swimmers received such a warm welcome and were treated royally by the pool and hotel staff.  They had a great time swimming in the 31 degrees water, although they admitted the water was probably a little too warm for their tastes. The showers were with the inside changing rooms and were very swish and modern.  The onsite cafe served hot and cold drinks, snacks and food and received top marks.  They had sunny warm weather for the whole three days and throughly enjoyed the whole trip.
